Product Description

Product Description

The summary execution by firing squad of confused and shell-shocked British soldiers in World War I by their comrades still arouses heated passions, over eighty years later. Calls for posthumous pardons are still made in Parliament on behalf of these men who were tried by flawed courts martial and shot within hours of the verdict. William Moore's presents a compassionate account of the dreadful proceedings that caused 346 men to be executed by their comrades.

4.0 out of 5 stars Compassionate and enlightening, 6 Dec 2001
An interesting study of the UK and Allied soldiers executed during the First World War. Dispelling the myth of 'hundreds executed' he examines some cases in detail, unofficial & unrecorded executions and the effect on the firing parties (some executions were exemplorary & carried out by and in front of the accused's unit, others were more discreet. Perhaps the most saddening is the young British soldier (Roberts?) shot for no real offence but merely to stiffen the resolve of 'les autres'. The contemporary debate within the Army and Government as to whether these soldiers were victims or culprits is covered as well as those enlightened officers and formations who introduced the temporary evacuation, rest and return to duty treatment widely, and successfully adopted in the second World War

Dealing even-handedly with the debate regarding a blanket pardon for those executed this book is both historically interesting and contrasts with modern treatment of battle fatigue / post-traumatic stress disorder.

Well-researched, saddening, even-handed and thought-provoking recommended for all interested in military history and the concept, the reasons for, and limits to, bravery.

4.0 out of 5 stars More than just a book on WWI, 11 Jan 2005

(REAL NAME)
Whilst this book mainly concerns itself with the questionable practice of capital punishment in WWI. Also delved into is the history of shooting men of your own side back to the Civil War period and into the 18th Centry. The book rounds off with the Second World War to highlight the authors findings. Overall it was a very easy to read book that supplied facts but still allowed you some ability to draw your own conclusions. Highly recomended.
