About the Author

Dante Alighieri was born in 1265 in Florence to a family of minor nobility. He entered into Florentine politics in 1295, but he and his party were forced into exile in a hostile political climate in 1301. Taking asylum in Ravenna late in life, Dante completed his Divine Commedia, considered one of the most important works of Western literature, before his death in 1321.

I'm educated to a normal level - I have a degree, but it's not in English literature. I don't profess to be a linguistic master, so this book is perhaps a little out of my depth in comparison with some scholars out there.

Nevertheless, I was very interested in reading this book - mostly because of the grim fascination about the tale of someone who gets to visit the 7 circles of Hell. Although I found it hard-reading at times, I was also blown away by it. I fully expected to not understand the text at all, and must admit I was pleasantly surprised. There was the odd bit I had to read twice to process, but in general, it was nowhere near as complex as I imagined.

Although controversial, perhaps in several eras, the tale and style is provocative and I always found it difficult to put down, even when I was struggling to fully understand.

I would certainly recommend this to someone looking for an enriching challenge.

I was most drawn to religious iconography and just the general lavishness of the whole text, but even on a much shallower level, it's a very interesting narrative.

Be confident, is the key! It's not as laa-dee-daa as you might think (although it is very long).

A fantastically adept translation of a masterful classic; with useful introductions and notes which make sense of the text. Good quality & inexpensive!

Great price for such a classic piece of world literature.
I literally bought it just to have it in my bookcase.
The English used is quite complex and slightly dated but that's not the biggest of problems when you have a somewhat literary background. (I'm a first year English linguistics student at university and I managed to understand most of it)

I'm not finished on this yet but feel I can tell you how it is going. It's been quite slow going because I am trying to understand what has been written rather than just reading the words. The first lesson was to look for the full stops. That sounds daft I am sure, but it is written in poetry form and because the language is so different from what we use today it is not obvious. Having said that, some of the phraseology is quite beautiful that you almost wish we did talk like that. I became interested following reading Dan Brown's Inferno which makes many references to it. I am pleased to be reading it and will keep going until it is finished. At the very least it gives good reason to aim to get into heaven. The alternative is not good.

Wordy! It may be a classic but I pity the people who had to study this book in detail.
