Product Description

Product Description
No bigger story has occurred in the city of Glasgow than the coming of the Irish. "Irish" tells how Glasgow would not have become the powerhouse of the Industrial Revolution had it not been for the labours and skills of the tens of thousands who flooded in during and following Ireland's biggest-ever disaster, the Great Famine. Nor would there have been the legendary Rangers and Celtic had it not been for the arrival of those hard-pressed immigrants, and the real story of the formation of the two clubs is just one of the many episodes uncovered here. The harrowing experiences and suffering of so many throughout Ireland during the Great Famine is brought home, as are the privations faced and sacrifices made by those fleeing impoverished Ireland on board overcrowded, tiny vessels. The author also reveals that one such voyage was one of the most deplorable crimes in maritime history. The acceptance of such a number of immigrants into one city is one of the great social achievements of its kind, but this did not come about without riots and social upheaval, such as what happened in Partick and on the very first Orange Walk.

5.0 out of 5 stars Scotland's Secret History, 11 Mar 2005
By A Customer
I've waited so long for this book to be written and John Burrowes does not disappoint. The coming of the Irish to Glasgow was probably the key factor which determines the city's identity today, notwithstanding the input from other migrants, yet reading most Scottish/Glasgow histories you'll be lucky if the mass migration merits more than a mention in the passing.

Unlike Boston, New York and other cities worldwide which have large Irish communities, the city of Glasgow is unique in that there is no official celebration of the Irish culture of so many of it's citizens and no St Patrick's day parade. The reason for this is that 'native' Glaswegians still find overt displays of Irishness offensive.

Today Celtic & Rangers football clubs and their fans are the target for many politicians trying to rid Scotland of it's sectarian baggage. Some of these same politicians, in their ignorance, say that these football clubs are the cause even though the problem pre-dates the formation of either club. Although these clubs have come to represent the two major cultures of the city, they are not the cause of the divide.

This book should be required reading for all those wishing to seek solutions to the 'sectarian', some would say 'anti-Irish', issues. John Burrowes' book sheds some light on the history of the Irish in Glasgow which heretofore has only been explored in obscure (to other than the serious scholar) academical works.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great social history, 7 Jun 2009
By Lanarklad (Kent, England) - See all my reviews
If you are like me a Scot of Irish descent who lives or has lived in Glasgow and the west of Scotland you will immediately connect with this story. Written in a clear and detailed way about what the Great famine was truly all about and how the thousands fleeing starvation came to work and live in the late Victorian powerhouse of industry that existed at that time. The navvies, railway workers, iron and steelmen and of course the miners, they all get a mention but more than that it explains the effects of two cultures merging. It wasn't easy then and can still be a problem now. Here's why.
I couldn't put this down its just so personal. A must read.

5.0 out of 5 stars The definitive history of Glasgow? It could be, 28 Jan 2008
A very interesting book and a great read. I bought it on the strength of the synopsis and the first review here and I wasn't disappointed.

Thoroughly researched and probably the finest I've read from John Burrowes, a big favourite of mine.

ps

Karen, "a boring old whine with a nasty 'we're good/they're bad' subtext"

You're joking, right? I really don't know where you got that from the previous review?

I thought it was a fair review but maybe I'm missing this subtext that you can see.....

Oh well, at least we all seem to have agreed on how good the book is!
