Product Description

Product Description
"Mysterious Scotland" presents an array of the weird and wonderful heritage of the country. Michael Balfour examines strange stories from the moors, forests, rivers, holy wells and lochs, where - as well as the old legends and dark secrets which he prises out of palaces, castles and cathedrals - he finds monsters, ghoulies, unsolved murders and ancient cures. Investigating a land where the past is reflected in the present, the author has roamed all around Scotland, exploring standing stones, mermaid beaches and magic springs. He seeks out new theories about the prehistoric, Celtic and Pictish stones, carvings, tombs and brochs which are scattered across the country. Among his many discoveries, he unearths long-forgotten prophecies, puzzling tales from the bothies, consuming traditions and distillers' tricks, and finds evidence of the legendary Highland second sight. Not forgotten are the great historical figures who throng the pages, each making a unique contribution to "Mysterious Scotland".

About the Author
Publisher and writer Michael Balfour has lived near the Stones of Stenness in the Orkney Islands and beside Loch Tummel in Perthshire. He has reviewed books, written for The Scotsman, and is the author of several books including Stonehenge and its Mysteries and Megalithic Mysteries.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Oddity Hunter's Paradise, 22 Jul 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Mysterious Scotland (Hardcover)
If you're a lover of the odd, offbeat, crazy, curious or just the plain silly, this is for you!!! The wildest wackiest guided tour of Scotland you'll ever experience. But don't let me undermine the authority which Balfour has endowed this incredible labour of love. His passion and enthusiasm for locating a good story has not allowed him to leave the events uninvestigated. Indeed he proves that the truth is often much more unbelievable than the fiction. The tales are told with a master's touch and illustrated by numerous four colour photographs all taken by the author proving his claim of first source research. A remarkable and thoroughly entertaining book which every Scot (especially ex-pats wanting to prove the majesty of their heritage) should own. Thank you Michael.

This review is from: Mysterious Scotland (Hardcover)
If you love the odd, offbeat, maverick, macabre, silly, lecherous, foolish and the funny, this is the best guide to Scotland you will ever enjoy. Balfour is to be thanked and admired for the love, devotion and enthusiasm he has obviously broiught to this magnificent labour of love. Every page is bursting with rare delights either described in meticulous and absorbing detail or illustrated by superb photos taken by the author proving his remarkable first source research adventures. It is a fabulous work deserving to be on every shelf of every person who claims to love all things wonderful about Scotland.
