Product Description
Synopsis
"Arsenal on the Double" is an intimate account of the most exciting season since the inception of the Premier League, seen through the experienced journalistic eyes of one of the hundreds of thousands of fans who has followed the Arsenal to hell and back. After 2001's Cup final calamity the Arsenal faithful were then faced with the horrendous financial cost of stumping up thousands for their season tickets. From early season euphoria they succumbed to fury about a referee stealing the rug from under them. From the agony of a bleak midwinter trip to the wilds of Blackburn, only to see a second-string side bow out of the Worthington Cup, they rose to the ecstasy of a magical return to the Millennium Stadium in the spring sunshine for the glory of FA Cup victory. Then followed the perfect finale at Old Trafford where they took the Premiership title on the enemy's turf.

4.0 out of 5 stars A must-read for Gooners, 27 Aug 2003

Bernard Azulay can certainly claim the right to write about the Arsenal. A Gooner through and through, he's up there as one of the most loyal supporters, as is made abundantly clear by the trials and tribulations he faces throughout this nugget-filled diary-cum-book.
The book traces Arsenal's progress through the glorious 2001-2 season, mixing newspaper reports with summaries of what was going on both on and off the pitch. As we already know the fantastic denouement to the season, the interest in the book actually lies elsewhere, in Azulay's musings on all things Arsenal. From the magic and majesty of Highbury, through the changing nature of the fan base, to the culture of the team and the way glorious, swashbuckling skill has replaced the usual gritty-but-grim Arsenal style, Azulay manages to capture the essence of the club, the team, and the experience of a supporter.
For ex-pat Gooners like me this book is a must, and there is so much in it that is relevant still today, after a blown title challenge and with no money in the coffers to develop the team.
Why only four stars? Three reasons - his Hugh McIllvaney-esque style grates, I got fed up hearing him gripe about his bad back, and the book could have done with better editing to add more value in the "gaps" between the articles. But this book is a must, up there with Addicted and just next to the collection of season videos!

5.0 out of 5 stars Fan-tastic, 30 Oct 2002
By A Customer
At last - a book about the extraordinary achievements of this great football club, that isn't a diatribe about who kicked the ball to who. To the contrary it reflects the emotions of the thousands of fans who 'went to hell and back', both emotionally and financially, as they followed their team through thick and thin and were rewarded with the ultimate prizes. The author, perhaps the most loyal fan of them all, clearly knows his game, but couches this knowledge in a series of anecdotes that let you experience every fixture. A must have for all Gooners.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fabulous Fan-fare, 23 Oct 2002
By A Customer
This is a terrific memorial not so much to the team who so valiantly gave all in the glorious 2001/2 season, but to the hoardes of die-hard fans who go to any and all extremes - physical, emotional and financial, to have the opportunity to demonstrate their loyalty. As evidenced by the experiences of the author who clearly writes with his heart.
