Product Description

Product Description

Under Houllier, Liverpool FC are once more a force to be reckoned with, winning five coveted trophies in 2001 alone. Incredible success on the field has come at a price, though. Houllier has survived a major heart operation and doubts persist as to whether he will ever manage to his former capacity again, fan's idol Robbie Fowler has been sold to bitter rivals Leeds United and a number of former Reds stars have been ruthlessly axed. This title recounts a dramatic tale without shying away from the controversies that have accompanied Houllier's reign at Anfield. It examines how Houllier rebuilt the club, instilled in it new disciplines and tactics and brought it renewed glory and silverware. It also highlights the emergence of Michael Owen and Steven Gerrard as home-grown talent. It details the on- and off-field traumas of Robbie Fowler and scrutinises Houllier's transfer dealings, his relationships with players and supporters and his heavily criticised tactics. Each of his four seasons in charge to date are comprehensively reviewed - from the ill-fated alliance with Roy Evans to the climax of the triumphant 2001/2002 season.

5.0 out of 5 stars Top Marks for The Red Revolution, 11 Oct 2002
The Red Revolution looks at the transformation of Liverpool FC under Gerard Houllier. The author, Conrad Mewton is a media and sports lawyer as well as a lifelong Liverpool fan.

At first I thought the book would just focus on the success brought to the club by 'Le Gaffer' and in particular the 2001 treble, but this couldn't be further from the truth. We learn all about Houllier's past from his time as a teacher in Liverpool during the 60's studying Shankly's training methods at Melwood through to how he set up the foundations for the French national side that turned them into World Champions.

When looking at Liverpool's performances in the past four years Mewton not only looks at tactics and motivational techniques but also the preparation behind the scenes. The smallest details are fine-tuned in the hunt for success right down to grass roots level - literally. One of Houllier's many advances at the training ground was to ensure that the grade of grass used at Melwood matched that used at Anfield!

The many sagas of Robbie Fowler from the cocaine celebration to his support of the dockers, the constant injuries to Michael Owen and Steven Gerrard and how Houllier had them sent to the renowned Dr Hans Muller Wolfhart for specialist treatment - it's all in here.

Far from just recounting events at the club, Mewton also looks at the tactics employed and offers his own insights into their worth. Opinions I must add that are well thought out and proves the authors worth as a Liverpool fan.

As co-editor of the site I believe I'm fairly well up to date with what's gone on at club especially during Houllier's reign, however there is more in this book than I could ever hoped to have known.

The Red Revolution will remain on my bookshelf as a valuable source on Liverpool FC and I suggest that any fan that wants a true insight into how the club is being run should get hold of a copy themselves. Believe me, it will set your mind at ease.

Fully recommended!

5.0 out of 5 stars Houllier's time summed up perfectly, 8 Aug 2003
If you ever want to learn all there is to learn about Gerard Houllier in a nutshell, and then read in depth analysis of every part of his reign at Anfield, then look no further. If you're a Liverpool fan you'll find this as a book you can't put down. It goes from Houllier's time as a young man in Liverpool, when he met Shankly and Peter Robinson, through his time in France, all the way onto his great time at Anfield. Truly great read by a great author!
