5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, well-written, witty book about football and life, 19 Nov 2001
By A Customer
A must-read, whether you travel round the country each year with your football team, or you wonder what makes anyone do something so insane. If you gave Bill Bryson a season ticket for Sunderland and a train timetable, you would probably get something very like this book. "Blinded by the Light" is the very funny journal of a committed fan, with a hilarious account of a round-England trip against all the odds. It is also beautifully written, perfectly capturing the passion and the excitement of following football. The range of emotions at different matches (resignation, elation, despair, stoicism ...) is conveyed brilliantly, and the observation of the supporters, the players and the game itself is spot on. Don't be put off reading this if you aren't a Sunderland fan - there's a lot here that rings true for anyone with an interest in the beautiful game. It will also be enjoyed by people who don't have a very strong interest in football, as the humour and the traveller's tales have a wide appeal. Enormously enjoyable, a great read.

5.0 out of 5 stars A witty and yet serious year in the life of a die-hard Sunde, 2 Nov 2001
By A Customer
This book is a MUST buy for all true Sunderland AFC Fans and for all those other followers of the National Game who truly follow their club wherever they play.

This book covers the weekly pilgramage of a real Sunderland fan as he battles against railtrack, bus services, and many other problems following his team around the country. His knowledge of the game and funny insights will keep you laughing (or crying) as you share his joy and disapointment during Sunderland's milenium season.

A great Christmas present for all soccer fans.

A man returns from New Zealand to England, and decides to follow his home town team all over the land for one season. The result: this book! An interesting, witty account of following Sunderland AFC all over the country. Would appeal to all football fans, but definately not to be missed for any other supporters of SAFC!!

2.0 out of 5 stars Not bad
I suppose this is interesting enough for SAFC devotees, but the match reports are a bit too detailed.

Reasonably funny and it passes the time.
