Product Description

Product Description

This is the story of the legendary football used in the World Cup final of 1966 and stolen shortly afterwards. Its subsequent history is also a history of a nation's struggle to define itself in the 1990s - a football's story disguised as a country's obsession.

5.0 out of 5 stars compelling - a rip-roaring page turner, 16 Mar 2001
By A Customer
Peter Allen combines the back-biting world of politics and soccer with the super-skulduggery of tabloid journalism to create a masterpiece in sports writing. An Amber Glow opens a revealing window into how Fleet Street gets its story - with devastating results. Fearless and solo, Mirror writer Allen goes up against five Sun reporters and rightfully reclaims the famous 66 football from a Bavarian beer cellar. What follows goes down as one of the most famous tabloid scraps in history involving a white-knuckle chase through Germany to get the ball home without getting collared by the opposition. This is not just a book for soccer yobs. Erudite, sassy and self-deprecating, Allen's style is particulary appealing to women and I lapped it up

5.0 out of 5 stars There's Only One Peter Allen . . ., 19 Feb 2001
By A Customer
Has the feebleness of English football ever been examined with such honesty as this? I think not. Peter Allen shows us why Germany swept England aside with such arrogant ease in 1970, 1990 and 1996. I now realise the World Cup "triumph" of 1966 was a just a fluke as was that meaningless win in 2000. Allen tells it how it is - England are soccer's natural also-rans.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best book I've read in years - Allen is a genius, 12 Feb 2001
By A Customer
Peter Allen is, without a shadow of the doubt, one of the most inspirational and humorous writers of the decade. With a rare charm and wry wit, Allen throws the spotlight onto the world of Fleet Street skulduggery. Many top journalists in Allen's position might be tempted to be big-headed and boast about their amazing coup. But with refreshing modesty, Allen tells the story like it is - poking fun at both himself and the rest of the hapless Fleet Street mob. If you buy one book this year, make sure it's this one. This review may sound a bit over the top - but I can assure I mean every word of it. Allen is a one-off, and his genuine talent is wasted on the Daily Mail. I only wish that he would turn himself to being a full-time writer, as I can't wait for his next offering.
