Product Description

Product Description
Ever since a 'dodgy' referee and a crackly transistor radio reduced his family to tears as they listened to the 1975 European Cup final, Rick Broadbent has been both blessed and cursed to be a Leeds United fan. This is the story of his quest to track down the legends of Elland Road and discover if they lived, breathed, ate, slept, loved and hated Leeds just as he had - or was it just a day job? In the course of his travels, Broadbent gathers first-hand accounts of the best and worst moments in the club's history, including the championship triumphs, cup shocks and the European controversies, as well as unearthing some stories and anecdotes. We hear Peter Lorimer's description of Don Revie's neuroses, learn the real reasons behind Gordon Strachan's departure, appreciate Tony Currie's account of his battle with the bottle and discover who had a bust-up with the legendary Pele. Weaving portraits of players such as Billy Bremner and Eddie Gray into a history of the club that has inspired such extremes of emotion, this analyses the effects of the court case that tore the club asunder, the sacking of David O'Leary and the sale of Rio Ferdinand. Including are contributions from Dominic Matteo, the new captain, and a candid interview with Peter Ridsdale, the chairman.

5.0 out of 5 stars MARCHING ON TOGETHER!!!!!!, 16 Jul 2001
By A Customer
What a great book this is. Written by a thirty-something fan of the club who really switches into the feel of this mighty club.

We go on a journey into the past and have a look at the present - its glorious wins and glorious defeats! His staple to the whole book is Eric Cantona and his 'magic' - and how the author tries for an interview. On the way however he talks to the real heroes of Leeds, including Eddie Gray(my hero!),Norman Hunter, Peter Lorimer, John Charles and a couple of chapters on Billy Bremner and Albert Johanson who are sadly not now with us. He has a few words with our modern White Shirt wearers in Nigel Martyn, Stephen Mcphail, Micheal Bridges and Leeds Hero BATTY,BATTY - plus a really interesting piece with South African Captain Lucas Radebe.

This is a brilliant piece of Football literature - very well written, so very interesting and a book all Leeds fans would love to write. Leeds Utds answer to Fever Pitch? Maybe - but in my opinion this is a unique read and a different perspective is given (Fever Pitch is brilliant in its own way!)

All Leeds fans should read this. But so should ALL football fans who enjoy footballing literature - this is intelligent, funny, interesting and for this reviewer took him back to the Eighties and gave him a few prompts - Alex Sabella?!?!? The Cantona goal versus Chelsea was special but that is just a piece of this great book - Buy it.

4.0 out of 5 stars A MUST read for all Leeds followers, 19 Nov 2001
Rick Broadbent captures the excitement and drama of over 40 years of Leeds legends in a most thrilling eulogy of Leeds success and rollercoaster fortunes since the glory years of the Revie era. Definitely the book to read if you've ever cheered Leeds to success in football.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amust read for all Leeds fans & all true football fans, 5 Jun 2001
By A Customer
An excellent insight into the minds of some of the greats who have graced Elland Road. Not surprisingly the old stars seem keener to talk than some of the younger ones (Kewell for example ignores the author) but then the old stars have the most interesting stories to tell. As a Leeds fan who enjoys football books in general this is a very enjoyable read.
