Amazon.co.uk Review
This area of Scotland has long been acknowledged as perhaps the most beautiful in the country and one of the most beautiful in the world. So it is very surprising that until this book, written by Robert D Campbell, was published, there has not been a comprehensive guide to the area.
Loch Lomond and the Trossachs lies to the north of Glasgow and has for many years been the playground and retreat of the rich and famous. Campbell gives comprehensive instructions on how to explore the area by public transport--road, rail and ferry--as well as detailing some scenic car routes to follow. (Or if you prefer, ideas on how to travel by the good old "Shanks pony"!)
Many will know the famous song which begins:
O, ye tak the high road
And I'll tak the low road,
And I'll get to Scotland afore ye
But do you know the origin of the song? Well, this book will tell you! You will find route details interspersed with other tales of legends such as Robert Bruce and Rob Roy McGregor and information on the origins of some of the many fine hotels, as well as vivid descriptions of the innumerable fine views.
The main body of the book is an historical and geographical account of a number of tours by public transport and it concludes with some suggestions for car routes and walking if you prefer not to use the public transport.
Campbell even teaches you a few Gaellic words, which might be useful when you are using your map. Time to get those boots out again ... --Ben Naylor
