Amazon.co.uk Review

In National Heroes, acknowledged Grand National authority Reg Green takes a look at the world's greatest steeplechase, from its beginnings in1839 to the present day.

From the first winner Lottery, who took the title when Queen Victoria had been on the throne only two years, through Red Rum's three famous victories, to the dramatic scenes in 1997 when coded telephone calls from IRA brought the biggest meeting of the year to a premature halt, every moment of Grand National history until 1998 is recorded.

More than a race, the Grand National is a truly national event, when even the most cautious among us can be persuaded to wager a bet. With detailed information on all the favourites, odds and winnings of many of the races, this may at first seem one for the true enthusiast, but Green's accessible style and obvious enthusiasm for his subject open it to anyone who has ever had a flutter.

Champion jockey Richard Dunwoody's foreword is all the recommendation the book needs:

In this splendid book Reg Green has perfectly captured the anguish and joy which is inseperable from the race's colourful and unpredictable history.
A great reference book, but above all, an enjoyable read.

Product Description

This is an account of the stars - both equine and human - who have given the world's greatest steeplechase, the Grand National, its huge appeal. From Lottery's win in the first race in 1839 to the present day there have been great stories associated with the race. Who was Captain Becher whose name lives on in Becher's Brook? Just what happened to Dick Francis and Devon Loch in the closing stages of the 1956 race? What was the secret behind Red Rum and Ginger McCain's incredible three National wins? How did Bob Champion and Aldaniti bring off one of the most emotional finishes in the history of the race? These are just a few of the stories from Reg Green's book. He recalls the three successive wins of Vincent O'Brien, the achievement of Jenny Pitman in training winners Corbiere and Royal Athlete and the late Fred Rimmel who trained an incredible four National winners. The redoubtable Mrs Topham whose family were associated with the race for over a century is recalled and so is the eccentric Dorothy Paget, owner of the great Golden Miller. The dramatic events of 1997 when a bomb scare led to the postponement of the race and which brought the Aintree spirit to the fore are portrayed in this tribute to a unique sporting event.

3.0 out of 5 stars Glaring omission disappoints in an otherwise very good book, 9 Jul 2001

I couldn't wait to get my hands on this book and was delighted with its comprehensive nature. The research Reg Green has done is magnificent and a tribute to the many brave jockeys and horses who've taken part in this great race over the years. BUT... When I came to the chapter covering 1993's void race I felt CHEATED! Okay, so it wasn't the most glorious chapter in Aintree's history but it was certainly one of the most amazing and astonishing - so why does Reg Green gloss over it in a couple of paragraphs??? I was appalled, and the rest of the book lost its appeal to me, as I felt it, too was liable to similar subjective editing. A reader not familiar with the events of that bizarre day, when a starting cock-up left half the field to complete the course before the race was declared void, would be left scratching their heads in confusion - surely not the aim of such a comprehensive study. It is this reluctance to explore the less efficient (but no less interesting) side of the race which keeps this book from being a five-star read. I felt let down by Mr Green and wonder at his reasons for it. We can only hope that this is revised in future editions.

3.0 out of 5 stars a few blunders to the finishing line, 22 Mar 2002
This book by Reg Green holds many facts figures etc. but lacks a little in passion, which ultimately is the magic of the Grand National, through the many years he chronicles it seems understandably so that certain Nationals stand out in his memory and heart more. All in all this is still a magnificent history of the greatest steeple chase in the world, with great illustrations and photographs including Rhyme 'N' Reasons remarkable recovery in the 1988 National.

5.0 out of 5 stars A fantastic book!, 6 Dec 2007

I've loved the Grand National since I was a child, and this book is an absolute marvel of research. I wasn't expecting details of every race, especially the early ones - but they're all here. Admittedly there are some incidental details and personal stories missing, but with over one hundred and fifty races to cover, not every story can be included. I must take slight issue with a previous reviewer who complained about the brevity with which the 1993 debacle was dealt with - frankly, I was glad to have it brushed over as the abandonment of the race was extremely sad and nothing I wish to dwell on.

Anyway, if you're a junkie for information on this great race, then you won't go far wrong here.
