Product Description

Product Description

Few cities in the world abound with so many extraordinary stories as Glasgow and the best of these are found in this collection. The city has witnessed some of the most significant events of the times; from tremendous triumphs to cataclysmic calamities, amazing achievements to spectacular sensations. The stories range from the work-in at the Upper Clyde shipbuilders to the legendary Maggie McIver, Glasgow's most astute businesswoman who was the founder of the Barras, and from the launching of the Queen Mary to the talents of Billy Connolly. They cover the nostalgia of the trams and the era when Glasgow was the cinema city, the memories of the great comedians that the city produced and the time when the tanks were sent in to tame the workers, to the courage of the citizens during the Blitz.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must-read for anyone keen to knwo more about Glasgow!!, 24 Dec 2000
By A Customer
I was enthralled from beginning to end about the life and people behind one of Europe's great cities.

The author really brings the city to life through the characters and life-styles that have shaped the renaissance of the industrial city.

An essential Christmas present for anyone who has connections to Scotland!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Journey into the past., 15 Nov 2005
By A Customer
Not quite sure what century the "Reader from Los Angeles" was actually talking about in his/her description of Glasgow but then we have to take into account the insular nature of a minority of American when they travel - the real world (outside of Disney Land) is a strange and scary place for them. I found the comments ironic coming from someone who lives in a city rife with prostitution, drugs and a rampent gun culture. I have lived in Glasgow my whole life and have never experienced the senarios quoted. However, enough of that this book is a good enjoyable read but everyone should remember that the stories are about the past and not always a description of the city today.

3.0 out of 5 stars Great Glasgow Stories, 11 Oct 2005
By A Customer
I find it hard to believe I've read the same book as 'a reader from Los Angeles', Great Glasgow Stories is a collection of short stories, researched and detailed by the author, if you come from Glasgow you may be familiar with some of them. I have to disagree that Glasgow is a place of 'profound violence', 'fuelled by drunkeness and ignorance', 'where you can not 'so much as go for a nice meal in the heart of the city without being accosted by foul, reeling drunks threatening bodily harm'. This is not a fair representation of my home city.
