Product Description

Product Description

An account of the 1997 Grand National, which was delayed due to an IRA bomb scare. The authors reveal the behind-the-scenes efforts to evacuate a 60,000-strong crowd; ensure the safety of the politicians and royalty present; how Liverpool accommodated the thousands left stranded; and the drama of the following day and the eventual running of the race. The book also tells the story of the stable lads who refused to leave the course and the tears of the trainers forced to abandon their horses.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very interesting and well written inside story, 18 Dec 2000

Really gripping retelling of the Grand National that was re-run after a bomb threat. Some nice background about the race itself and the history of the course. The narrative of how the race was called off after a coded warning is great; you can feel the drama of it all. Looks at the role of the police, the media, the racecourse workers, and the punters in the evacuation and the eventual running of the race. A lot of detail that was never disclosed at the time, especially about the police crisis management capability. I really enjoyed it and would strongly recommend it to anyone who likes racing or the Grand National.
