I had only vaguely thought about the effects of the Reformation and John Knox and his followers on the Medieval churches of Scotland. This book tells for example how St Andrews Cathedral was reduced to a ruin during this time, but Glasgow and Kirkwall escaped by fortunate intervention. Excellent text and plenty of pictures for all cathedral churches whether still being used or completely derelict. Really more enlightening than just giving a straight account of the features of each building from an architectural point of view, with limited history.
