4.0 out of 5 stars Shortlisted for the English Association's Best Books Awards, 10 Jun 2002
By H. Lucas (Leicester, England) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
What do you do when you are a hermit crab and your shell is getting a little too tight and you live on a coral reef? Well, you look for a new shell. And that is exactly what the hermit crab does attempting to interest other sea creatures in the process. "This kind of colour," he said to a line of passing puffer fish. But they had not seen a shell that colour and in any case they were busy.' But when the hermit crab is knocked out of his shell and tumbles into a large, dark and heavy shell. For safety reasons her stays in it and sleeps, only to find himself being woken up as something was trying to get inside his new shell....'so he gave the intruder a nip.' High quality bright and vibrant illustrations of the hermit crab and other fish boldly inform each page of the story. The use of a large font makes the story very accessible, and the use of emboldened type draws attention to key words, such as Something and inside and nip. This device certainly adds to the attractiveness of the book At the end of the story there are nine pages of information about the Great Barrier Reef - each page of the story is revisited and the fish and sea creatures are identified with brief descriptions about each one of them. This is very detailed and a useful resource, but probably not one which will be used by many children in Key Stage 1...

5.0 out of 5 stars Colourful dive into the life of a hermit crab, 4 Nov 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Old Shell, New Shell (Hardcover)
This book provides a very colourful insight into the life of a hermit crab and its efforts to find a new shell to live in. It magnificently opens the "Monde du Silence" to the children. Helen Ward's drawings are of exceptionnal quality and this book will be appreciated by all the family.
