5.0 out of 5 stars Good story with a great retro feel., 9 Sep 2009

Because of a retro 1950s (?) styling with integral typography, this book has a refreshingly different feel to it. Mr Peek the zookeeper finds his jacket to be rather tight one morning and as he sets off round the zoo he mutters to himself "You're getting fat"..."getting old"..."your diet is terrible" .. and so on. These grumblings are heard by the animals who each assumes they are the thing to which Mr Peek is referring. Fortunately it's all a misunderstanding and is easily put right as the mumbling-round-the-zoo process is repeated in reverse. Mr Peek however remains amusingly oblivious to the whole process and just can't understand why the animals have been glum that day. It's a simple, witty and linear story which will make children smile from about age 2 and comes highly recommended!

4.0 out of 5 stars Great discovery!, 14 Jan 2009
By Library Mice (Somerset) - See all my reviews
This book got brilliant reviews and was listed in most of the main newspapers' summer reading lists. It looked like it would be good fun for my five year-old son and so it was! Every morning Mr Peek, puts on his favourite jacket and goes off on his round in the zoo. But this particular morning, the jacket feels a little bit tight and as Mr Peek mutters to myself as he walks around the zoo, a massive misunderstanding between him and the animals starts to develop. This is a brilliant book; the children loved the story, which they found hilarious, and the artwork is very original, very "retro".

Imaginative story coupled with brilliant illustrations makes this a great book for young kids. The illustrations alone are enough to captivate my young 2 year old. Read more
