5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful!, 28 Jun 2005
By A Customer
My son is a big fan of Simon Bartram's man on the moon so when we saw Dougal we were really excited. Dougal goes on a diving holiday but finds rather more than he expected. The illustrations are amazing there are fish, crabs, sharks, dolphins, shipwrecks and even a city under the sea! There are so many things to spot in the pictures like the mermaid following Dougal on his adventures and the ghost who follows him from the shipwreck. Dougal like Bob his cousin often doesn't see things that are staring him the face and that adds to his charm. The big question is will Dougal go home or stay under the sea forever. Read and find out because this really is superb.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great but missing somethng, 9 Feb 2006
Having enjoyed The Man on The Moon and having read it many times to my little boy I eagerly anticipated the new story. Again wonderful pictures with so much to look at and hidden incluidng an in-joke from the previous book about aliens. However the pictorial storeytlling is better than the write as sometimes the tex seemed clunky to read out. Still recommend the book though as my 5 year old and his friends find it amusing and it provides plentiful opportunities to discuss and explore different landscapes.

5.0 out of 5 stars An absolute smasher of a picture book, 24 April 2007

This is a great book and one which lasts and lasts. Currently, it spans all three of my children (that's 2-7) because the story itself is fairly simple and yet there's lots of extra depth in it that keeps it at the top of an older child's favourite list too. The essence of the story is simple - Dougal dives down deep in a wonderful submarine and finds Atlantis, a magnificent busy city of the merpeople. Every page is bursting with fantastic colourful and exuberant illustration. There's plenty to spot: mermaids, sharks, submarines and over 100 different kinds of fish as well as hints of the Man in the Moon (another cracker by the same author) with a couple of aliens, and the tiniest rocket in the sky. There's a droll humour throughout, much of which is based upon Dougal's oblivious nature - he thinks the sharks are lurking as they want his salad, and doesn't see anything interesting as he dives between underwater dinosaurs. The way the story is written is more advanced than Man in the moon - however, my two year old doesn't seem to mind at all that some of the text is structured 9 a.m. did this, noon did that etc. and my eldest rather likes following the time frame through the week. So if you're after a fun and imaginative book to inspire your children, you'll be well pleased. I just hope Bob (Man on the Moon) and Dougal come from a large family -can the next cousin be a Polar explorer please?
