5.0 out of 5 stars Brooding atmosphere. . ., 16 Sep 2005
By ILONACAT (WIRRAL, ENGLAND) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)
This review is from: The Dark Horse (Paperback)
Unlike some reviewers, I don't ascribe to the idea that a fantasy novel has to be long in order to be good. This novel is not long; moreover, many of the individual chapters are very short. So what ? I feel Sedgwick achieves what he's trying to do, namely, to write a fantasy novel rich in atmosphere and relationships. The world evoked is definitely Scandinavian, though not rooted in an actual-on-the-map place. The Storn tribe are under threat from within and without. It is a coming-of-age story-Sigurd starts off as a young boy but is quickly propelled into maturity. It is also a magic story-a girl brought up by wolves, a sealed box with unusual powers. Among battles, there is friendship and loyalty. The characters are believable, flesh-and-blood-warts-and-all.

In short, this is good compelling writing, and it has whetted my appetite for more novels-however short-by Marcus Sedgwick.

3.0 out of 5 stars Mysterious and intriguing, but lacks a bit of clarity, 9 Aug 2008
By S. Barnes (UK) - See all my reviews
(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
This review is from: The Dark Horse (Paperback)
I've now read most of Marcus Sedgwick's novels, and this one is so far my least favourite. I've really enjoyed all of his other books but I found that this one lacked a bit of clarity and is a bit muddled towards the end, almost as though the author wasn't wholly convinced by his own ending.

It's the story of Sig and Mouse. Mouse was adopted into Sig's family as a young girl, when she was found by villagers living with wolves in a cave. Sig's father took her home and Sig soon became very protective of his younger sister who was found to have some quite special powers and was therefore ostracised by many of the villagers. Brother and sister soon had a very close bond, but this is put to the test as the threat of the people of the Dark Horse comes nearer and nearer.

It's OK, BUT there are better Sedgwick novels. Try 'My Swordhand is Singing', 'Witch Hill', and 'Dark Flight Down'.

What an incredibly haunting and stunningly beautiful book "The Dark Horse" is! I was totally gripped by the whole thing. It was poignant, powerful and utterly breathtaking.. The weaving of the story keeps you hooked in and guessing. Marcus is a highly talented writer...
