I'm a big fan of Bartram's better known books, Man in the Moon and Dougal the Deep Sea Diver, so was very pleased to come across this in our local library. My children 2 and 6 have been really taken with it, and so I feel moved to write a review. The book is a halloween night story told, with very few accompanying words, through incredibly vivid and strong illustrations in the rich colours that Bartram is known for. In a nutshell, at midnight pumpkin lanterns from across the land awaken and float in their masses, accompanied by the odd witch and ghost etc., to a great big party. And then there's this fantastic picture of the moon in halloween fancy-dress - as a pumpkin. As the pictures are vivid and fairly lifelike, they are rather dark (in content, not printer's ink) and so not one for the sensitive child with the overactive imagination. That said, it's a smashing idea and I would definitely recommend this to any child who's a big fan of halloween, ghosts etc. Perfect gift at a Halloween party.
