Product Description

Review
The classic popular guide comprehensively revised and updated for another year, detailing world wines by region, grape varieties and wine styles, with advice on vintages, tasting, storage and serving. First published in 1968, and since translated into eight languages, this is one wine guide that has stayed the course. With the racks of wine books every bit as confusing as the range of product they describe, this is clearly a book that has earned its place on every bookseller's shelves. Includes a new illustrated section on colour variations, a glossary and appendices. An authoritative guide in a convenient format, for all wine lovers from beginners to professionals.

Product Description
This guide offers detailed explanations on the first principles of tasting, and the influences of grape, variety, soil and climate. The author summarizes regional characteristics and vintages for each country. There are detailed tips on how to organize a tasting, how to take tasting notes and a full glossary of tasting terms. The text also offers practical advice on storing and serving wine.

5.0 out of 5 stars As important as a glass, 27 Sep 2001
By A Customer
This book concentrates a lifetime of training and wine-tasting experience into a concise, elegant handbook for anyone who appreciates wine - professional or amateur.
This is a timeless book - you won't find much space wasted on vintages or star winemakers - each page concentrates on the characteristics of grapes, the effects of climate and terroir (position and soil type), the influence of vinification, maturation and cellaring.
The author leads you through the wine-tasting experience, analyzing each stage of the process - appearance, aromas, flavours - without a trace of pomposity or arrogance.
A handbook - as important as a glass to anyone who wants to learn about wine - and a classic which belongs in every winelover's library.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Serious Wine Taster Must Own This Book, 10 May 2004
By Bernard Klem (Stamford CT) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
One of the few landmark books in the field, to be treasured alongside Amerine and Roessler's "Wines: Their Sensory Evaluation", and Peynaud's "The Taste of Wine". Broadbent's much-revised and -reprinted classic combines a hypersensitive palate, immense vocabulary, irrepressible wit with an encyclopaedic memory. A perfect amalagam from this well-seasoned British wine writer, judge, auctioneer and claret connoisseur. The only flaw is not of Broadbent's doing; rather, it is the incredibly stingy publisher, Mitchell Beazley, who produced this book in 1-point "Versailles", a beautiful typeface rendered nearly unreadable without benefit of a magnifying glass. Broadbent deserves much better than this slap across the eyeballs.
