Product Description

Product Description

In Metro, writer and engineer David Bennett gives a comprehensive insight into the rise of underground travel over the past 150 years. He traces the technological progress - from the risky breakthroughs in tunnelling techniques that made underground travel possible to the innovations that have made it safer and more pleasant. He also explores the architecture of the most dramatic and inspiring stations ever built. Metro also takes an in-depth look at the cultural phenomena, such as poster art and graffiti, that have flourished on underground systems around the world. Thought-provoking, informative, entertaining, and expansively illustrated with 200 photographs, Metro reveals historical facts, heroic achievements, beautiful architectural details, and the secrets of subterranean engineering, and will appeal to historians, designers, architects, rail enthusiasts, and world travellers alike.

1.0 out of 5 stars Buy this for the photos, if at all, 14 Dec 2004
By A Customer
While the photos are indeed a treat to look at, the text is so full of inaccuracies that it best be ignored. I'm not an expert of every one of the Metro systems profiled, but with regard to each one with which I am familar, I can attest that Mr. Bennett's factual errors were pervasive. Dates, directions, system topology, and more...nothing jibed with the actual facts -- even such seemingly minor things as referring to Washington DC as a "state capitol" when I think that many people are under the impression that it is the national capital of the USA...or referring to Ontario as a state when many in Canada, and elsewhere, believe it is still a province. With editing like this, it's no wonder the metro descriptions are valueless.

An interesting account of the history surrounding underground railways. For a starting point of interest the book is good, however i think that some areas could have been explored more fully. Great photos, but some inaccuracies in the text.
