Product Description

Product Description

Structured chronologically, this text charts over 100 years in children's book covers and jackets, dating back to the 18th century. It features authors and illustrators predominantly working in the UK and the USA including Edward Lear, Randolph Caldecott, Beatrix Potter, Kenneth Grahame, Arthur Ransome, Jean de Brunhoff, Maurice Sendak and Raymond Briggs. This volume contains colour images of over 400 books, both rare and familiar, with surveys of classic titles such as "Struwwelpeter", through the pioneer works of the mid-20th century such as the "Babar" books, to the varied products of the post-war period, including the "Harry Potter" and "Lemony Snicket" books. The author offers insights into developments in printing and binding techniques, publishing, marketing as well as detail and comment on authors and illustrators. It should be of interest to collectors, design enthusiasts and lover's of children's literature.

5.0 out of 5 stars Children's Book Covers is a delight, 22 Sep 2009

I actually purchased this for a (requested) birthday present for a learning resources manager, but I found it very hard to give it away! It's a beautiful book, both as a 'coffee table' book and as an informative work on the variety of children's book covers; the styles and changes that have taken place over the years... and for us older ones, a lovely trip through memory lane too!

4.0 out of 5 stars Interesting and well-presented, 12 Mar 2008
By Secret Spi (Germany) - See all my reviews
In "Children's Book Covers", Alan Powers takes us on a very interesting historical journey through the design and illustration of children's book covers from the late 18thC to the present day.

The book is of interest on a number of levels: from the history of the techniques used, to the wider historical and sociological implications through to one's own personal memories of many well-loved titles of the past.

The writing is intelligent and factual without becoming academic or dry and the book is very well-presented. The beautiful reproductions of hundreds of book covers speak for themselves.

It was wonderful to see so many old favourites from my childhood again: I have to admit that the chapters covering the 50s, 60s and 70s were of most interest to me.
