Product Description
Synopsis
The emergence of the boutique came about in the early 1960s against a backdrop of social upheaval. For the first time, high fashion became available to the young, the attractive and the "cool". As a venue for customers to meet, gossip and entertain friends, the boutique was pivotal in stimulating a new interest in self-image and representation. Here, fashion expert Marnie Fogg explores the social, cultural and creative ramifications of the boutique phenomenon. Nine chapters cover the key aspects of the scene, Mary Quant, the new fashion magazines, and the rise of Carnaby Street. All of the major protagonists of the time are included, from Barbara Hulanicki of Biba, Sir Paul Smith, Celia Birtwell and John Bates, to their contemporary models, photographers and fashion editors. "Boutique" should appeal as a resource to fashion and '60s experts and enthusiasts, and to the cultural historian.

4.0 out of 5 stars Ready, Steady, Read!, 14 May 2004
By A Customer
A colourful look at one of the most revolutionary facets of fashion history. Gorgeously produced with a wealth of images, this delightful read is only tainted by an unusual multiplicity of typographical errors, rendering it less useful as a reference tool. Still, it is well worth it for the gorgeous photos and fascinating information.

4.0 out of 5 stars Colourful and informative; an engrossing read, 15 Jul 2003
By Paul (West London) - See all my reviews
This book is for people who were there and remember the fun and excitement of going shopping and wearing outrageous 60s clothes - and its also for those who weren't - as it really does put into perspective just how amazingly daring those times were, sartorially and socially! The author has spoken to all the main players of the time - its not just a view from the sidelines.
With the Ossie Clarke retrospective coming up at the Victoria and Albert Museum - there is no better time to get acquainted with the story behind how these new fashions were sold!
I loved this book - the photos are amazing and the first hand accounts were great.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fab!, 16 April 2003
This book reminded me why I found the 60s so exciting. It brought back to me memories of hanging around in the Birdcage in Nottingham, thinking I was the coolest chick on the block! The author has done a wonderful job of interviewing the main protagonists - you really do get a feel for the extent of their innovation and rebellion. And these interviews are backed up by some fantastic images.
Great chapter titles too!
