Review

"The Supreme Court overthrew an injunction unanimously in May 2015, saying: 'A person who has suffered in the way that [James Rhodes] has suffered, and has struggled to cope with the consequences of his suffering in the way that he has struggled, has the right to tell the world about it. And there is a corresponding public interest in others being able to listen to his life story in all its searing detail" (THE SUPREME COURT)

"You might expect James Rhodes to have been crushed by his experiences. On the contrary I don't think I've ever read an autobiography which is this exuberant, this full of life, this addictively readable" (MARK HADDON)

"A poet once said great books help you to live your life. They also help you survive your ruin, and James Rhodes's Instrumental is a masterpiece of creative endurance. His passion is his programme, his heart is his true instrument, and you might not read a more moral or more loving book this decade" (ANDREW O'HAGAN)

"A searingly honest, moving and compelling account of a life damaged by abuse but saved by music. James Rhodes is a rare and gifted spirit with something vital to tell us all. This is a tough but beautiful book" (VICTORIA HISLOP)

"The publishing sensation of the year" (MAIL ON SUNDAY)

"A mesmeric combination of vivid, keen, obsessive precision and raw, urgent energy" (ZOE WILLIAMS GUARDIAN)

"Thrilling and harrowing . . . Unsurpassed and unsurpassable" (SUNDAY TIMES)

"Instrumental is no 'misery memoir' . . . I have rarely read so cogent account of the nature of victimhood . . . Visceral and palpable . . . Among the most powerful pages I've read all year" (SCOTLAND ON SUNDAY)

"Bravo to a survivor who refused to be silenced . . . What really marks this book out is his confrontation with the unsaid (or rarely said) aspects of child sexual abuse and mental illness . . . Some of these thoughts verge on the taboo and it takes clarity, courage and intelligence to say them as plainly and honestly as Rhodes does" (INDEPENDENT)

"We're locked inside his head for long periods and it's a manic place to be. But he is brilliant . . . and insightful . . . James Rhodes writes at full volume" (BLAKE MORRISON GUARDIAN)

"There is an insight, often startling but always valuable, on almost every page . . . a tough, riveting read" (THE TIMES)

Wow. This is a beautifully well written, heart breakingly poignant and frank account of a remarkable life. James Rhodes is a concert pianist with a troubled back story and mental health issues - this much I already knew. But the story of how he came to be this person is extraordinary and brutal.

This is not a book for the faint hearted. The language used could make a Sergeant-Major blush, but the story itself might make that same Sergeant-Major weep. Rhodes speaks about the life-changing event of his early childhood when he was raped - repeatedly and violently - at school. He does not speak euphemistically of abuse. This is not an account of 'kiddie fiddling' or child molestation. He calls it what it is. Rape. And as his book unfolds we see time and again how this alters everything for him. He writes with the brutal self-awareness of someone who has lived on the very edge of the abyss, and yet - somehow - is still alive and living.

Music holds this book together, and is credited by Rhodes as saving his life. Each chapter names a particular piece of music and a specific recording and performer, and the reader is invited to stop and listen (thank you Youtube, Spotify, et al...). A story is told of the composer's own life, and time and again we hear of bruised and broken people composing music that will outlive us all. The story of how Rhodes himself came to be a concert pianist is perhaps the most remarkable part of his whole account.

James Rhodes tells us about his relationships, loves and passions. He does it with wild abandon. He invites us to try to understand how something brutal and evil changes everything, but that broken people (we know who we are) can still find a way to be. He writes with passion and charm, with eccentric wit and breathtaking clarity.

In contrast to most of the reviews, I was not a fan, nor was I even aware, of James Rhodes. In all honesty, I saw him on an interview on This Morning and bought the book based on the fact that he seemed interesting. In another opposition to many if the readers, I am not a huge fan of classical music. I listen to it maybe twice a week and most of the time don't even know who I'm listening to.
Albeit, this memoir is an enthralling and touching work of a troubled genius. I read the entire thing in a day the story captivated me that much.
The morals, messages and lessons that are interwoven into the book can be applied to anyone in any walk of life, regardless of musical taste or ability.
I want to thank James Rhodes for the small teachings on classical composers, the emotional roller coaster he threw me upon but mostly I want to thank him for being a genuine inspiration to listen to more classical musical and also, possibly most importantly, to live my life as creatively and happily as I want to.
I would recommended to anyone and everyone.

I've been a fan of James for several years, have seen him play on numerous occasions & even been lucky enough to meet him a few times. He's always been honest about his past so I thought I had a pretty good idea of what this book would contain but actually reading it was like having my heart ripped out by a pack of rabid wolves.
It is searing, brilliant book and be warned - he pulls no punches when writing about the horrific sexual abuse he suffered as a child, catastrophic mental health problems, self harm and suicide. He explicitly issues a trigger warning for anyone with similar problems and this shouldn't be taken lightly - there were two chapters in particular which were personally absolutely devastating and affected me for days afterwards.
Yes I cried reading this book and felt anger & horror but I also laughed out loud and had my heart swell with joy & positivity. This book is so much more than a cathartic confession - it's a beautiful love letter to his wife, an expression of infinite devotion to his son and a manifesto for hope and the beauty & power of music.
This book is a tough read but incredibly rewarding and the frankly ludicrous legal battle that he had to go through to get it published makes it all the more astonishing.
Buy it. Read it. Share it. Listen to the accompanying playlist of beautiful, incandescent music. And marvel at the courage and honesty of this brilliant, flawed, talented man whose voice deserves to be heard.

If you only read one book this year, this is it.

As a mother of a two young boys, I welcome this book with open arms. It is brilliant, brave, charming, witty and a real cut the cr&p account of the devastating impact of childhood rape.

To think that this story could have been gagged is almost unbelievable. As parents we do nothing to safeguard our children by silencing victims and choosing ‘not to think about it’. Without use of a time machine or a magic wand, the only real thing we can offer survivors of abuse is a voice. We need books like this to shine a light on the darkest corners of childhood experience because conspiracies of silence and cover stories only ever protect the abuser. If a five year old boy can bear to live through it, then we as adults must listen and learn from what he has to say.

In spite of all that the author has had to endure to get this book published, I hope its final tone of optimism still rings true and that in the long term it proves to be a healing experience for him and his family.

Well done James Rhodes xxx
