What was good about this book was that it was about real issues. It was quite a happy book because the main character could cope with an incredibly difficult situation. Matt and Emmy loved each other like they had never loved before. Even when Emmy became pregnant they stayed together and loved each other - even though Emmy's parents tried to tell them that they were too young for a baby of their own. Then Mahalia was born and Matt fell in love with his baby straight away. Emmy said that they should love Mahalia - but then Emmy went away. Matt is now a singly dad trying to raise his baby. One day Emmy will come back to her family - won't she?

This is one of the most powerful and memorable books that I have read in 2001. Matt is a character who is so human that you can imagine him living down the road with his little baby and picture him walking past everyday. Mahalia is a baby who echoes the truth of every baby - the ups and the downs.

This is an emotional book that stayed with me long after I put it down. Matt and Emmy were so much in love with each other - but that love didn't survive the birth of the baby that resulted from their love. The bittersweet ending is what will stay with me the longest because it is an ending that happens too often in real life. If you know someone who is a pregnant teenager then show them this book and share Matt and Mahalias story.
