Product Description

Review

"'You won't find a better or truer depiction of Ireland than this one'. - Frank McCourt (author of Angela's Ashes)"

Product Description

The Monagan family left home in 2001, exchanging Connecticut for the dynamic city of Cork. A compelling portrait of modern Ireland in all of its excesses, foibles and inspirations, this is a travel narrative that will appeal to anyone who dreams of making a new start in a foreign land.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Lovely piece of work, 1 May 2005
By S. Roche (Waterford, Waterford Ireland) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I just love this book from the authors point of view, an American doing his best to fit in with the Irish society, and with a wee bit of hassle as would be expected. It's a spots an all wiewpoint on how Ireland is, Lovely when looking at it tru rose speckled glasses, the lovely pics on the net of the Emeralrd Isle, or reading the tourist info brochures. but like the man did, if you want to know someone come live with them. a completley different bucket of vomit, and have to say from being Irish, I love the book 'cos it describes what is not on the can.
As we say in Ireland 'Fair Play to ye butty'

4.0 out of 5 stars Not All Leprachauns and Guinness, 18 Nov 2006
I was surprised how much this book mirrored my own adventures in Ireland. Arriving from distant shores like myself (author=US/Cork), me=UK/Waterford) with visions of a care-free life of Guinness-fuelled jollity, Monagan is soon brought back to earth with a bump as he faces up to the many problems with living in modern Ireland. Victim of crime, harassed by local teenagers, frustrated at trying to earn a living he soon begins to doubt his reasons for coming at all. If it wasn't for the warmth of the many friends he makes he surely would have left without enough material to write this book. But he plugs away and I'm glad he did. Monagan has struck an enjoyable balance of portraying contemporary Ireland without being too negative, nor too sentimental.

5.0 out of 5 stars A brilliant blend of humor, wit, travel and history, 6 Feb 2006
By Amy Swearingen - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I delighted in the armchair journey with David Monagan and his family as they embarked on their adventure to Ireland. It's refreshing to read a travel memoir that gets past the stereotypes to relate what's truly special about Ireland and its people.

This book is a must read for anyone who has ever longed to leave the familiar to take on new challenges and adventures. It also offers lots of delicious nuggets along the way and inspiration to book the next flight to Ireland.

I didn't enjoy this book.
I thought it would be funny in an outsiders view of Ireland kinda way.
It's not worth reading. Read more
