3.0 out of 5 stars Out if date, mediocre quality of information, 7 Jun 2009
By Jane Costello "HistoryBuff" (Caribbean) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I have just recently returned from a 2 week trip to Belize. I had bought The footprint Guidebook to Belize a couple of weeks before setting out. Unfirtunately before leaving I could not find the book ! At the airport I picked up the Lonely Planet's Guide to Belize as a replacement.

Unfortunately this guidebook is not a patch on the Footprint Guide.
If you're looking for a very brief 'overview' of everything in Belize, this will be okay for you. However, as we realise that a printed guidebook is out of date from the moment it hits the bookshelves,( This edition was October 2008, one would think reasonably up to date) Lonely Planet should address the changes and inaccuracies on their website so that people may print out updates and add them to the book.

Case in point. "Crocodile Isle" bar/restaurant/cheap accomodation was an editor's pick just off the Hummingbird highway at Silk Grass on the way down to Placencia. We turned off the road in search of lunch and it sounded like a great place according to the guide. After driving through the town dump en route and going down a rough dusty track we arrived at the padlocked gates of Crocodile Isle. On asking a local later, they said the place hadn't worked out and it had been closed for a year.
Lonley Planet should pick up this kind of info and post it on their website.
Information on the main tourist and Mayan sites is very sparse. The Footprint guide is more informative and a far better deal than Lonely Planet.
