Whilst the classic sites are described in this book, I was disappointed about the background information on for example the social and dining scene that I'd expect from a lonely planet guide. It seems horribly dated to me already [1st edition Jan 2001], and you can readily print out similar information by searching for a few pages direct from the Internet....

I find the so called "facts" information either too out-dated or totally not what I actually experienced "on the ground". Shanghai is arguably the most refreshing city I've been, and I have been to many!
The book seems to have been written by someone who had not been there in at least more than a decade, or on a wintry day where everybody is an annoyance?
It just didn't gel. If I had not decided to go anyway, I would have given Shanghai a miss based on this book.
