4.0 out of 5 stars Really, it's not that bad!, 2 Feb 2003

The book does paint a slightly over optimistic interpretation of Melbourne. However, lived in and visted many cities and area's throughout Australia including Melbourne many times I do believe it is a great city with much to offer. I have yet to meet someone who didn't enjoy their stay.

It doesn't have the icon's of Sydney but strip those away and Sydney begins to look dated and tired. Melbourne as a city excels in proviging it's residents with a generally pleasant place to live and shows far more sign of improving itself that most other cities I have visited around the work with an unrelenting building programme. It is fine city with a huge amount to offer. It's a shame so many visitors simply make it only as far as Sydney when per square mile Melbourne and Victoria have more to offer and please you with than most other states.

It's refreshing to find a book that makes an attempt to encourage visitors to make the effort to spend time in this city. However, I believe the book as with most travel guide books is simply not marketed towards locals who no doubt should already know what lies on their doorstep. The book is mildly over rated, the city is'nt!

2.0 out of 5 stars A rose-tinted view, 1 Nov 2001
By A Customer
Apparently Melbourne was once named 'World's most liveable city', and this guide certainly reads as if it is. Attractions and venues are reviewed with glowing praise, and you're left with an impression of a cosmopolitan metropolis throbbing with excitement and jam-packed with fascinating things to see. Unfortunately, Melbourne is really just a sleepy provincial capital, and doesn't quite live up to the hype. Yes, it's a pleasant place with some good things to see (Healesville Sanctuary and Old Melbourne Gaol spring to mind). But overall this book makes far too many overclaims for Melbourne's charms. This is a shame, as it's very disappointing to read about a wonderful location, spend hours in the car getting there, and then find it's a total let-down. Lonely Planet originate in Melbourne and this may explain the bias in this book, but it's really no excuse for taking such liberties with the truth. The guide does have some good maps and gives you enough information to find your way around easily, just make sure you add a hefty pinch of salt.
