2.0 out of 5 stars Could have been a lot better..., 25 Sep 2000
By A Customer
Having spent nearly 4 weeks in these countries without what is usually perceived as the benefit of a Lonely Planet guide book, I picked this up to see what I had missed...

This book is disappointing, it is very thin on detail, it even omits things! It is useful for accommodation recommendations, but that's probably about as far as I would go. Better buy the Bradt Guide to Georgia and the Trailblazer Guide to Azerbaijan - the coverage in these is far and away superior.

Hopefully a second edition will put more meat on the bones of what should be one of the best guide books to a fantastic part of the world

2.0 out of 5 stars Needs to be twice the length, 24 Sep 2001
Having been recently to both Georgia and Armenia, the thinness of this volume is fairly surprising. The Georgia section is not so bad, and there seems some sense of what is and is not worth seeing, but the Armenia section seems to have no focus as to what the author considers to have importance and the background info is insufficient for the reader to make his/her own judgement. And why no comments on one of the richest folk music traditions in the middle east???

4.0 out of 5 stars I would have been lost without it, 7 Jul 2003
By Tastydogs (Reading, England) - See all my reviews
Now don't get me wrong I am not really a travel snob but I have begun to run out of ideas for city breaks from Heathrow & normally I find the Lonely Planet Guides just a bit too worthy ( well thats after you get past that gory opening chapter they all have about the dangers of contracting a nasty little rash/fungus/buboe) . Meanwhile BA to Yerevan just about adds up to a long weekend jaunt. But you don't really want to know about that you want to know about the guidebook

All the other reviewers are right I'm sure- there are loads of errors in the book & they do say go to tricky far flung provinces
with reckless abandon BUT for Yerevan its pretty good. Pretty good in a 2 or 3 years out of date sort of a way & now there haven been lots of improvements in the city. Pretty good in a there is no other map of Yerevan available easily sort of way either. And finally pretty good in that the Bradt guide is tiny on Armenia & there really are no other sensible guides published. I gather there is a new Bradt guide due (I met the guide for the author)& thjings have changed quickly in Armenia so this would not be too soon

In summary- you are much best served by taking a book with you & right now this is the best there is. Do go to Yerevan & take some trips out into the country before the next generation of guidebooks come out because then the place will fill up with tourists & it won't be nearly as much fun. Now about that Time Out guide to Minsk.......
