The Essential trekking guide to the best trekking on Earth - needs a revised edition, 18 Sep 2009
What can i say?
This is a fantastic book, detailed brilliant trek hike routes to suit all levels. Complete with detailed maps, guides to towns, villages, transport, culture, language, health - everything you need to know!
It includes all major treks, with authors favorites, hints, tips, everything - and I mean it! It is ESSENTIAL reading for this part of the world, which, according to the authors, is superior to Indian and Nepal mountain treks.
Encompassing all four mountain ranges - the Hindu kush, Hindu Raj, Karakoram and Himalaya - including Chitral, Gilgit, Ghizar, Hunza, baltit along with the difficult technical glacier and base camp treks - Baltoro, K2, nanga Parbat, Tirich Mir etc.
Complete with colour plates maps, brilliant!
This book is thicker and more detailed than the whole LP Pakistan book!!! And unlike the Pakistan books meagre trekking section - this one is mind blowing!
GRIPES
Not enough information on certain things which confuse beginners - details on specific clothing, especially boots. Lacks more detailed instructions and information for the beginner on specifics relating to tents and stoves - need to do more of ones own research into these things. Lacks more specific details on weather, temperature and climate, and exactly what to bring (clothing).
Another gripe is that with the present security level in Pakistan - some section of this book may now be off limit or dangerous, and thus the security status details are fairly outdated.
Digital Camera information is outdated, and so is information about GPS and GPS devices, maps and how to source these things.
It needs a new edition desperately.
