Probably the best guide book to the DR, 6 Jun 2000

A thorough guide to the whole of Hispaniola. We only travelled in DR but this was more accuarte than the Rough Guide we also had. There were a few errors (things change I guess) but nothing major. Good maps and travel information. All you need to see the real Dominican Republic not the all-inclusive beach resorts most people stay at. Enjoy your trip!

Not aimed at independent travellers, 21 April 2004

This book falls short of Lonely Planet's reputation as a guidebook forbudget-minded independent travellers. We used it to go to DR in Feb 2004.Time and again it gave the expensive "easy" options first (book a tour,take a private taxi) and either ignored or barely mentioned the cheaper,independent alternative (arranging things yourself and using publictransport). The three week "things to do" includes one week in anall-inclusive resort! Be warned that some of the dive schools listed haveclosed. That said, DR was a beautiful place to go on holiday.

I spend a lot of time in the DR, travelling around. The lonely planet guide is less that useless, the authors seem to have spent very little time in the DR, and give out either useless, or sometimes dangerous advice. They fill up space with pointless inane comments, rather than usefull pieces of advice. For example, they only review 10 hotels in Santo Domingo - a city with hundreds of hotels and 3 million people.

Buy the Rough Guide instead, far more useful.
