This book is beautiful. The combination of text and comic book style illustration keeps you interested and keeps you guessing, highlighting things of import to the protagonist, a 15-year-old girl called Minnie. As a reader, you can't help but simultaneously be drawn into her world and fear the situation that leads to Minnie's jadedness. However, Minnie is on a voyage of discovery as she discovers herself, and I empathise with her, after all, we've all been through situations that shape us as individuals, and we all eventually progress from being children to adults. For some of us this is a hard transition and I think part of the naive appeal and charm of 'Diary of a Teenage Girl' is the fact that it reflects this hard transition. I've read it again and again because so much of Minnie reminds me of what I've been through and continue to go through. An insight into the mind of the adolescent in all of us.

An incredibly thought provoking, challenging read. It's very gripping, and the illustrations add a further dimension to the book, giving Minnie's world a real texture. It's a very unique book, and I enjoyed it so much that I lost all track of time with it, reading it in two days (bear in mind that I'm a GCSE student, the exact same age as Minnie in fact.) Minnie's self-destructive, nihilistic behaviour resonates with my generation despite being set long before many of us were born. I wouldn't draw the line at classic when describing this book, and I'm certain it will endure for many years more.
Minnie, despite all her flaws, is easy to empathise with, and as her situation deteriorates, I felt true despair for her. On many levels, I feel that Minnie is a lot like myself, and within the context of my own mental illness, and my own bisexuality, Minnie's story meant rather a lot to me. I feel as if this book will stay with me for many, many years in my heart.
I truly loved this book, and I think anyone, young or old (not too young obviously) could potentially gain a massive benefit from reading this.

I bought this for my thirteen year old daughter after reading the reviews. As soon as she opened it she gave it straight back to me saying its not appropriate! I should of took time to look through it properly first, so this book is not for all girls of this age.

Part comix part diary, this book is a semifictional account of a teenage girl growing up in San Francisco. It deals with some pretty heavy issues, but also is packed with good humour! The artwork is what you would expect from comix legend phoebe gloeckner.....excellent! Recommended.
