5.0 out of 5 stars Freedom from the Past, 18 Aug 2009
By Susan E. Finch "Susan NYC" (NYC) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This book is fascinating and freeing! Dr. Kessler explains that our neurons have become encoded to respond to the need for sugar, fat and salt for survival, and drive us to reward ourselves with the pleasure of eating even if we are satiated. Dopamine, combined with our memories, are a powerful combination and what worked in the past may not be helpful now. We crave food because of our past "stories" that were associated with it. I see that when I am honest about my hunger I can make healthy choices rather than be conditioned by my past. Kessler says "Past experience narrows our focus, and awareness is essential".

Awareness, a non-judgmental seeing of our behaviors, is essential in the brilliant works of Ariel and Shya Kane;Working on Yourself Doesn't Work: The 3 Simple Ideas That Will Instantaneously Transform Your Life, Being Here: Modern Day Tales of Enlightenment, and How to Create a Magical Relationship: The 3 Simple Ideas that Will Instantaneously Transform Your Love Life. Their books lead the reader effortlessly to the brilliance and magic of life. All of these books are enlightening inspirational.

4.0 out of 5 stars Empowering, 24 Jul 2009
By sainte-carmen (London) - See all my reviews
(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)
Kessler's book lays out a compelling argument for how some in the food industry are developing foods not to nourish or satisfy our basic needs but rather to trigger compulsive overeating. His analogy to the tobacco industry is convincing. While many people may persist in the belief that people get fat because they're either lazy or greedy, Kessler accurately argues that the chemistry of some types of food, i.e. its fat, sugar and/or salt content, set many people up, in spite of their best intentions, for binge eating.

This isn't a diet, but the information in this book may be enough to empower many people in their battle against the bulge. Highly recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars Whats happening to our food, 16 Jul 2009
By bucky (london) - See all my reviews
Very interesting book about how the food industry manipulates the public to make them big profits and big waistlines for the public. Only problem was the descriptions of the bad foods just made me hungry,so probably not a good book if your trying to lose weight.
