3.0 out of 5 stars Transformers - Profiled!, 3 April 2009
By Simon Hall (Shipley, West Yorkshire, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
A welcome reprint by IDW of these earlier Dreamwave books. Written by Adam Patyck and James McDonagh, these two volumes are the first time the enitre Generation One 1980s toys 'tech specs' have been collected in one place.

The profiles are very well written, with some updating of Bob Budiansky's original profiles (written and published as Transformers Universe in 1987, fact fans). There's a nice touch of having some of the profiles written by other Transformers, which adds something new to the entries you may be familar with from Budiansky's earlier work. They are also slightly briefer than those older profiles, but given the breadth of characters covered thats fair enough. Particularly as the Micromaster teams now all have their own individual entries!

This second volume also includes a look at the Transformers pyshiology, reproductive nature, as well as technological developments like downsizing, mass shifting, merge groups and a look at the socio-political arrangements of Cybertron. Whilst these are great, they bear little relevance now to IDWs own reboot of the Transformers franchise.

The negatives are largely due to the artwork, unfortunately. A lot the proportions and perspective used for the characters is just awful. Dreamwave's Transformers were always bulky and more robotic looking, but its a style that only Don Figueroa could carry off. Pat Lee's own work is quite balloony and marshmallowy, and imposed as a house style it means many artists are drawing agianst their normal style, leading to some very unsatisfying results. Personally, I'd have been happy if they'd done what Marvel did and just used the character model sheets from the cartoon to give the endeavour a more consistant appearance.

IDW have also ommited from their reprints, the Beast Wars intro/outro pages as these are both at odds with their own Beast Wars comics and the 'canon' of the TV show. The design of the reprint, whilst largely unchanged from Dreamwave's original work, isn't quite as sharp. I do wish they'd get rid of that thick black outline around the Transformers logo!

Three stars then, as the writing is great, but the art is quite uneven and distracting when you notice the mis-proportioned limbs and tiny faces.
