5.0 out of 5 stars Sooo many robots, 8 Mar 2007
By David Ford "avid fan" (Cheltenham) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This is volume two of Simon Furman's new take on the Transformers, which those who have read my review of the first volume will know I love. I was worried that he couldn't keep up the quality as the series progressed, but if anything, Stormbringer is even better than Infiltration.
Set in space at around the same time as Volume One, we learn of what befell the now wasted Cybertron, with Optimus Prime having waking nightmares of a calamitous fight with Thunderwing. Those who read the original UK/US comic will know of Thunderwing as the Pretender who stole the Matrix. In this continuity, he is possessed of almost godlike power, and took on both the Autobots and the Decepticons. That's right; Furman has managed the impossible and actually made the Pretenders COOL. (Can anyone say 'techno-organic symbiotes?'
Anyway, a research team consisting of Jetfire and the Technobots head down to Cybertron, only to be captured by Bludgeon and his followers, who have found Thunderwing's body and plan to set him loose...
I won't spoil the rest; all I will say that a whole bunch of Transformers are brought into the story- fair play to the hardcore fans who can recognise them all. Watch out for Springer and his Wreckers, as well as the fan-favourite Predacons. The story rushes unstoppably towards a mighty conclusion, and events tie in directly to those in Infiltration.
The stakes are noticeably higher in this series, with battles a lot more destructive than at any time before. This volume is perhaps not as accessible to new readers as the first one, throwing a hell of a lot of characters at you as well as concepts that, while long-time readers will understand them, are designed to be detailed later on in THIS series.
Furman's writing is, as ever, excellent, and for this volume he is partnered with Dan Figuerra, who handles a cast of giant killer machines with flair and style. Those who have read Infiltration, of course, will need no further impetus to buy this.
Next up is volume Three: Escalation. Can't wait.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome. In the true sense of the word., 22 Mar 2007

(REAL NAME)
Furman's new take of the TF universe displays far more maturity than the Budiansky days of old. No storylines involving a rock concert or wrestling match here. Oooooh no no no. Instead, Furman is developing an epic Star Wars style science fiction saga aimed at those who remember and love the old TF comics, but only read them nowadays for a nostalgia kick rather than to be enveloped in a great tale.

And a great tale is what we have here. Stormbringer continues (well, kind of) the story started in the fantastic Infiltration collection, minus the human characters and introducing a plethora of robot personalities. The desperation of the Autobot's efforts shines through, and the Decepticons are shown as far less two dimensional than the evil baddies of yesteryear.

Revealing plot points would be irresponsible, but the new direction taken with Cybertron is superb. The old ideas reborn thing is like Batman Begins, only with two tonne robots kicking the crap out of each other. I love it and I hope it continues for a very, very long time.

I ordered this comic with earnest as I have been eagerly reading other Transformers comic (spotlights volume 1 and 2). The Stormbringer collection did not disappoint. Highly recommended for any fan of comics or Transformers
