Product Description

Synopsis
You have been exposed to subversive influences: for your own security and well being, you will now be terminated. Tracy Dwayne Jocelyn Higgs has a problem. Not only is he a Security Officer saddled with a girl's name, he has awoken to find himself in a vast shopping mall with no recollection of how he came to be there. Worse still, the mall is under almost constant terrorist attack. The security apparatus operates a permanent state of emergency and none of the other terrified inhabitants of the mall have any idea how they came to be there or how to get out. Stalked by the obsessive femme fatale Mandy, shadowed by the annoying Information Officer Simms and in love with the no-nonsense Doctor Jodi Francis, Higgs must find out where he is, get in touch with his feminine side and save the inhabitants of the mall before he is terminated for his own security and well being. Warning, this title contains the following: violence, cannibalism, disturbing concepts and subversive ideas. Exposure to this novel will result in your immediate termination for reasons of national security.

5.0 out of 5 stars No problems found, it's ready to ship., 13 Mar 2008
By A. Whiteford (UK) - See all my reviews

I wish to state for the official record that despite
having read "Homeland" I am not a Terrorist. Homeland
is a is white nuckle ride set in it's own present
(your future), it will mess with your mind without
leaving that present.

Higgs knows, or at least thinks he does, that all
"his" mind is not there. However, the ever present
threat of flying lead and termination combined with
the pressure of having to find the terrorists are
enough to concentrate what is left.

The entire cast of charaters seem twisted and yet we
can probably pick them all out from the office were we
work. Don't be like the residents of the mall, don't
pin all your hopes on the system working, on the
system saving you. Do something for yourself and read
this book and trust me - you don't need a new suite.

For myself I must take my chances on the run, but at
least I am free and know the truth - about Homeland. I
will report progress at the authors website. An
excellent read, congratulations to Michael Amos.

4.0 out of 5 stars A subtle touch of DNA and a satirical fish to the face, 12 Feb 2008
Science fiction may be used in a number of ways - to explore the imagination, illuminate scientific concepts, and satirise current morals. Mr Amos's book sits firmly in the last coven, his humorous cynicism redolent of the late Douglas Adams and his anger palpable on nearly every page. The story is straight-forward, being the classic plot of people dicovering their true situation, but the societal premise of a paranoid, isolationist, hawk establishment is very timely. Much tension and comedy is found at the expense of the ruling class, while the bitter end almost seems to come too soon.

Direct in style and a rapid read, this is a solid if simplistic (and in places slightly awkward) first novel from a new writer with bile to spare. One to watch.

2.0 out of 5 stars A book that would be better for a good editor, 27 Jan 2008
By Mrs. J. Proctor (Dorset, UK) - See all my reviews

There's a good story in here, trying to get out.

Unfortunately, it's bogged down by poor writing technique. Too much telling and not enough showing. The dialogue also feels rather formal and stilted.

I'd love to see what this writer could do with a decent editor as I like the ideas in the book. The characters are trapped in an endless shopping mall and have no idea how they came to be there. (I don't know why, as I didn't make it past the first few chapters)

Stuck in a mall with people trying to whack you? That IS a nightmare to behold. Good first effort, Michael.
