2.0 out of 5 stars More Karen Karbo's opinions than Kate the Great, 7 Nov 2009
By PhabulousF (London, UK) - See all my reviews
I'm a huge fan of Katharine Hepburn and her work and was really excited about reading this book. Many parts of it were very good and Karen Karbo is clearly a KH fan; there are lots of little stories about KH and her life but there was nothing new in it. I didn't expect the book to be a biography of KH, more a witty account of the personality and traits that made her such a unique legend. The book tries to be what I expected from it but doesn't quite achieve it. The author tries to speak almost as though she knew Hepburn and knew better than her, making suggestions that 'perhaps had Hepburn slowed down she would have been happier in later life' - she sounds a bit like an overbearing, know-it-all mother in law to be frank. Other times she comes across as Hepburn's biggest sycophant. She speaks to the reader like she's your wise but fun friend in college but comes across as the kind of person that everyone secretly mocks. That's when it's bad. When it's good, it's when you get a genuine sense of admiration and respect for a powerhouse of the woman that is Katharine Hepburn.

It's a small, easy to read book that makes some good and enjoyable points so for that reason it's worth buying however if you're looking to learn anything about Hepburn or are expecting a gem of a book as I was, you'll be highly disappointed. There are many, many better books on Katharine Hepburn - I know, I have most of them. I had decided if I loved this book I would buy Karen's newest work, the gospel of Coco Chanel. Now, I'm not sure whether I will buy it or not. Sorry Karen, better luck next time.
