5.0 out of 5 stars More of the same, 4 Jan 2004
This review is from: The Dragon Masters (Paperback)
Yet another great book from Jack Vance, The Dragon Masters won him the Hugo, which says it all really. I could describe the plot, but it actually doesn't sound as good as the book turns out to be. The idea is based on genetic engineering and breeding, and revolves around a first local and then interplanetary war, see that sounds cliched but this book is much more complex and thats just the simplest way to describe it. If you like Jack Vance you will like this book. My only complaint is that I finished it in about a day, it was quite short! There is a version of this book which also includes The Last Caste, another great book which increases the reading time, try and get that if you can.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Fantasy, 19 Oct 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: The Dragon Masters (Paperback)
This is a classic of its time. Jack Vance's descriptions are as evocative and vivid as ever. If you enjoy the challenge of following the language and obtaining a sense of the people and places the author describes, this is for you. If you want your thinking done for you, this isn't your author - go and watch TV, or read almost any of the recent published 'fantasy'. This is an author who, when you read his books, does not give you the feeling he's writing for the money.

3.0 out of 5 stars It's nice but nothing more, 6 Feb 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: The Dragon Masters (Paperback)
I'm a big fan of Vance but I didn't find The Dragon Masters as great as some of his other works. It's too short and simple: the ingredients are there but the narrative doesn't develop into anything else than a somewhat naive adventure story. This is a common problem with Vance but sometimes it doesn't matter at all - look at Tales of the Dying Earth. However, The Dragon Masters would have benefited from a more realistic approach. There are some interesting inventions typical of Vance (e.g. the sacerdotes), and you'll certainly satisfy your need for sense of wonder. It's just that the story is too cartoonish and quite clearly written without much inspiration. Too much space is wasted on detailed describtions of dragon fights. It's an enjoyable read if you like Vance but I much prefer The Last Castle, which is also included here.

5.0 out of 5 stars Solid early Vance
This won the Hugo for best *short story* in 1962. It is pretty long for a short story, but it can't be judged as a novel. Read more
