Product Description

Product Description

"From Narnia to a Space Odyssey" is the dialogue - through fiction, non-fiction, and correspondence - in which Arthur C Clarke and C S Lewis debate, discuss, and consider the great hope and potential dangers of the rise of technology. Their encounter sets the stage for a question we face today: is technology the beauty that will lead to a more utopian society, or is it the beast that endangers our humanity and spirit?

About the Author

1.0 out of 5 stars an unnecessary book, 13 Oct 2007
By H. van Wingerden (Netherlands) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
From Narnia to A Space Odyssey is a discussion of the correspondence between C.S. Lewis of Narnia fame and Arthur C. Clarke who wrote the Space Odyssey series. This correspondence started in the 'forties and initially had to do with the critique of Clarke on Lewis's ideas on the dangers of scienctism in his Space Trilogy. The latter part of their correspondence concerned an invitation from Clarke to Lewis to read a paper for a SF society, and Lewis's opinion of Clarke's book Childhoods End.
The book closes with a number of short SF stories by Lewis and Clarke respectively.
My objections to this book are as follows:
1 On comparing the transcriptions of Lewis's letters in Miller's book and in Hooper's recent edition of C.S.Lewis's Collected Letters (vols. 2 and 3) I discovered the Miller transcriptions to be garbled and in not a few places sheer nonsense whereas Hooper's transcriptions gave excellent sense.
2 An article of say about 10 pages on the controversy (if the correspodence merits this qualification) in one of the Lewis study-group bulletins would have sufficed.
3 The addition of a number of short stories by both authors is wholly unnecessary to understand what the book is all about.
Conclusion: an unnecessary book.
