hugely relevant, 28 Feb 2007
This slim volume of 250 pages is a very relevant general study on Chinese politics and business in relation to the world. No nonsense is what you get from this author: he offers discussions on basic issues confronting today's China and beyond.
First, he identifies this: China's key and most fundamental problem is the existence of a self-appointed officialdom that has stopped China's progress for ages, especially in the Mao era. Second, it is openness, globalization, individual private initiative, and foreign involvement that are pushing the nation forward. As such, Chinese people have gained a bright new life though restless and wealth focused.
Furthermore, to deepen these general discussions, he offers vast information and analysis on issues like market movement, international trade, banking, retail, tourism, telecomm, auto and direct investment, etc. Numerous global multinationals doing biz inside are studied, which is done in making direct comparisons with numerous leading Chinese multinationals.
At the next level, he offers a broad and long term view of China's involvement with the outside world. His analysis concludes that global cooperation, economic and political sharing, and interdependence will gain more strengths as time passes.
This book is highly organized and its presentation is very lively as well. Last but not the least, author Gu is a veteran Chinese reporter/consultant who writes on the ground of China. So, being very open about China's challenges and opportunities, as well as what is really inside Chinese political and business sphere, is the very best this book offers. In this regard, no other book I have read has done better.
Finally, the afterword by Andre Gunder Frank is very meaningful as well as provocative. Franks focuses on one issue: Is China's rise good or bad for the West? Again, his answer is history-oriented.

Ad-hoc collection of superficial case "studies", 27 Feb 2007
This book is characterized by an ad-hoc collection of superficial case "studies" Readers value in-depth, rigorous analysis may like to avoid this book.
If you study other best-selling books about China on Amazon, you will notice that a group of user IDs from Shanghai-China promote this book by first aggressively attack other books (in customer reviews of these other books) and then referring readers to this book. This group of user IDs leave (identical!) customer comments on many best-selling books about China, attacking these many books as "superficial," "boring," or "distant," and then refer readers to this book as "far better."
How could all these best-selling books be so bad? And, more suspiciously, how could these many user IDs criticizing these best-selling books and endorsing this book using exactly the same phrases? A plausible answer is that all these many IDs are managed by the publisher of this book - or even by the author himself!
Readers can have their own judgement about such promotion tactics. I am in the view that a really good book tends to be associated with decent promotion tactics, while a lousy book tends to be associated with dirty promotion tactics. My own experiences of reading this book confirm my view.

very informative, intelligent and provocative, 30 May 2007
Timely and informative book focusing on various political, economic and business issues on current China and global affairs. Offers very creative ideas and information on numerous key issues facing all nations.
First, the impacts of globalized economy, banking, trade and employment on both emerging and developed nations. Among others, author offers very extensive discussions on the role of global multinationals in reshaping world business and economy today. It details how these multinational corporations influence the changes and development of Chinese market, economy, business and institutions. Numerous industries are examined as well, including banking, manufacturing, hightech, retail, telecomm, energy and infrastructure. Also, over a dozen leading multinationals are studied.
Second, the changes of Chinese society from a tightly closed one to an increasingly open, dynamic and forward looking place. Such changes have offered large opportunities for the domestic private sector and individuals. In particular, it gives very detailed studies on the emergence of China as a manufacturing center as well as its consequences. Namely, it causes serious domestic market-oriented changes on one hand and global manufacturing and job transfers on the other hand. This further impacts the old economic and business map of the developed world in particular. Author asserts that all the changes remain at the very beginning.
Third, political and institutional changes under globalization, market competition, and openness. Author is very well versed on the basic issues of Chinese political system and its current development. he asserts that China remains to have an urgent need to transform its self-appointed government body into a modern service provider. Enormous information and dissusions are presented to show why this is the case. And author is very open and candid on the vast political challenges confronting China. But he also asserts that an open society brings vast new opportunities to deal with these tough challenges.
The last four chapters offer further discussions on historical, global changes. Author offers strong arguments that globalization is an inevitable process of human history. Furthermore, this globalized economy and politics offers vast new opportunities for all people and nations. What is more, China and other developing nations gain vast new ways for development as well as resolving deep-seated political and institutional problems at home.
Overall, it is a first class work, highly intelligent and creative. Better still, author is able to give a very clear presentation, which is a huge plus.
