Despite an occasional typo, perhaps unavoidable in a 520 pages long book, Intern Beth, a novel by Ayul Zamir, has a rhythm that keeps the language fluid and flowing. This is solid work. Sizzling hot and shocking: this is the theme of Doctor Zhivago controlled by the society and circumstances, and that of Madame Bovary, placed together in the contemporary United States. Using multiple points of views, this novel is story-telling at its best. Page-turning and highly-readable narration, combined with a story that transcends the time and place, this is an absorbing and highly entertaining book. This is one of those books that one would call a night book. Taking cues from the works ranging from the Greek and the Ancient Mythology (Apollo and Daphne, and Homer’s Iliad) to the Modern (Camera Lucida and Unbearable Lightness of the Being), Intern Beth is likely to become a landmark novel in its time. It interprets photography of Ansel Adams and Roger Fenton, and the hardball games that the doctors and other people in power and the zealots sometimes play—effortlessly, in a new adventurous style. It is hard to not believe that this story is based on real experiences. Reminds one of Kafka’s demonstrations of societal control of an individual; well, just transfer that to the contemporary United States! But a great read—one can immerse in this book more than once. Check out the free excerpts on this website: narration flows like a gentle creek—and very sexy! But be warned: this is not a book for the faint-hearted! It is shocking at places, and can be uncomfortably realistic. My view is prejudiced, I know the author, but very simply stated, this novel is a classic set in contemporary America. It pushes the limits and tells the story on an edge; too frank at times, the narrative style is absorbing and shocking. Dialogue grips you, and is down-to-earth, doesn’t hold back or hesitates! This book maybe one of those one time fantastic achievements that are hard to repeat … Using mythology, fantasy, dreams, and surreal powerful visuals, this novel is full of gentle whispers, but it is a big river with roaring waterfalls, and they come when you least expect them! The excerpts read beautifully, as does the free chapter on the publisher’s website (Fultus).
