Willis's look at the chicanery of so-called spiritualists, faith healers and channellers, etc is pleasantly written, but its brevity means that one can't get toomuch of a feel for the (rather stereotyped) characters. Willis, rather than flexing any verbal muscles to create a story of any depth, appears content to glide though the prose, throwing out some interesting facts about Mencken and Clarence Darrow, but otherwise giving us a piece of genre fluff with some strong nods towards the Chandler genre, and to John Varley's Steel Beach (Kildy Ross being taken from Varley's hero/ine Hildy Ross?) and to Varley's progenitor Heinlein.
One can zoom through this in an hour - wait for the paperback to come out.
