4.0 out of 5 stars De-mythologizes the Bible, 28 May 2007
This book begins with a sledgehammer and ends with reverence. The first chapter comes on strong and some "Bible-believing Christians" could make the mistake of thinking the author is anti-Bible. Actually, as many excellent examples and references show throughout the book, the Bible is treated with great respect. Good points include advice on how to overcome the "translators in our heads" which are always morphing the meaning of the Bible's words as we read. The author maintains it is nearly impossible to truly understand the scriptures without a knowledge of the historical settings and the stumbling blocks language pose to Bible readers. Presents some views you probably never heard in an evangelical sermon on Sunday. Courageous and exciting analysis of the difficulty of understanding the writings of God's people.
