Yes, it's written by a celebrity, Sex & The City and Californication star Evan Handler. Yes, it's autobiographical. Yes, it touches on the horrors of childhood and the troubles with women. But it does all this in a candid, self-depreciating manner that although it doesn't scream 'like me!', you end up doing anyway.

This is actually Handler's second book (following his debut, Time on Fire: My Comedy of Terrors, although you don't have to have read that to understand this) and it deals with his recovery from acute myeloid leukemia, a disease only a minority recover from, after his diagnosis at age twenty four. There are no pleas for pity; instead, Handler tells the complete truth in a series of mini essays that forego a linear narrative in favour of the 'getting to know you' approach (as he indeed states in the introduction). There are no behind the scenes anecdotes from the major TV series he has worked on but this is a witty, emotional and thoroughly impressive account of Handler's life and the struggles he faces as he tries to reacquaint himself with people and places he'd all but said goodbye to.

This book is perhaps the most honest and candid I have ever read, and I applaud Evan Handler for putting pen to paper and telling his story in his own way. And yes, I would recommend it. You'll laugh, you might cry, and you will definitely be more humble having finished it.
