5.0 out of 5 stars GREAT debut novel with sweet plot and realistic characters, 20 Jun 2007
By Eveline "Eveline" (Brussels, Belgium) - See all my reviews
1961
Christie O'Kelly is only fourteen when she meets her step-cousin Todd at her uncle's wedding. Christie sees in Todd the man of her dreams and they start a discrete relationship. Whenever Christie thinks of the word motherly she thinks not of her own mother but of Todd's mother and her Uncle's new wife Cary, who is very caring and loving, not like her evil sisters or her cold mother. Christie spends a lot of her time at Jack and Carly's house and the long distance thing she has going on with Todd seems to work for the next couple of years. Until one day, in one of Todd's letters, he writes that he is married. Christie's dreams for the future are shattered, her heart is broken.

1973
Eight years later Todd comes to visit her but Christie moved on with her life and doesn't want anything to do with him anymore. She can't trust him and he hurt her too much. They decide to keep out of each other's way. Again some years pass before they meet again but the circumstances are different this time and they need to stick together. Uncle Jack is sick and they both need to take care of him and support Carly. When Todd supports Carly through the rough times just a bit too much the thing that should have brought Christie and him closer together now only makes them grow further apart as Christie feels she comes 'second' in his life. Also something else is troubling Christie's mind and she can't talk to Todd about it, which makes them grow even more apart. If she tells him what it is that's bothering her, will he believe her? Or will it be the final closure of their relationship? What if she is wrong about her suspicions about the real death of her uncle?

Christie, the main character in If Truth Be Told is a cute and smart fourteen year old kid. Her character is very well worked out into detail. On paper, she is portrayed as sensitive, troubled and insecure as most of the teenagers are in real life which makes it very easy for the reader to step into her shoes. I feel like I know her so well, that I can relate to what she's feeling and all her insecurities. I drifted away into her world almost immediately.

Also, the author, Lynda Fitzgerald, makes sure you love and hate along with Christie everyone she loves and hates. Even if that may turn around all of a sudden and you might like the one you disliked or dislike the one you liked.

Christie's coming-of-age is a wonderful, sensitive story to follow, told from her own point of view which brings along laughter, sadness, butterflies and curiosity.

I enjoyed reading every single page of this book and I am more than happy I took a shot at this book from a debut author whom I'd love to see more work from in the future. If you're a romantic soul you should not miss out on this novel!
