4.0 out of 5 stars Jay continues his legacy of enchanting writing., 12 Sep 2001
Being a somewhat zealous fan of Mr. Jay I eagerly opened the packaging as this bound effort of his mythical magazine arrived on my door step. I was not to be disappointed.

Jay weaves his trade mark literary spell in a style that can only be described as radiant, accompany Jays wondrous prose are many marvellous illustrations and two pull outs, one of a amorously quaint photograph of the 'Dream Land Circus Side Show' with the declaration of: "New Sensation, Mortado, Captured by savages and crucified, see him nailed to a tree the thrill of thrills," measuring around 35cm and the other showing a magnificent illustration of Bartholomew Fair from 1729 measuring around 45cm.

The book itself, as the dust - jacket suggests, tells of the life and times of eccentric and magnificent performers from wide and varied arts. Conjurors, cheat, hustlers, pranksters, jokesters, impostors, pretenders, side show men, armless calligraphers, mechanical marvels and popular entertainments are all covered in this dazzling volume. Each tackled with grace and elegance, the historical facts are clearly presented and Jay throughout keeps up his trademark dry wit and intelligent humour that fans of his previous works will so enjoy.

One of my own personal highlights of the book was the magazine devoted to the conjurer Issac Fawkes and his Surprising Dexterity of Hand. One point in particular that will stick with me the next time I witness a performance of sleight of hand is Fawkes widely circulated claim informing the reader he would take loyal patrons to the moon! now that's an effect I would think even Mr. Jay himself would have trouble with!. Another personal highlight was the magazine devoted to "Fact and Crucifixion" in which Mr. Jay tells the story of a rather bizarre novelty act which evolved the crucifixion of the entertainer live on stage! A truly specialist branch of any art form!

Familiar readers to Jay will recognise this collection as Jays ever growing examination of wild and eccentric performers from time bygone. Readers of Jays now celebrated "Learned Pigs and Fire Proof Women" will find more absorbing, engrossing, enthralling and utterly enjoyable reading within the covers of Jays Journal of Anomalies.
