4.0 out of 5 stars couldn't put it down..........., 3 Sep 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Say When (Hardcover)
The thoroughly compelling story of a marriage break up. Unusually told from the male perspective. Funny and poignant, good characterizations. Berg's books are so easy to read without being lightweight. They 'grab' you right from the first page until a satisfying ending. Highly recommended. If you read one of Berg's books..........you'll want to read them all.

5.0 out of 5 stars A fascinating, first hand account of a marriage break-up, 6 Oct 2004

This review is from: Say When (Paperback)
'Say When' is a unique description of a marriage break-up, unusually explained from the man's point of view. Griffin has been happily married to his wife Ellen for years, they have a beautiful daughter Zoe and things couldn't be better. But then when Ellen drops the bombshell that she has met someone else his safe, secure existence shatters in an instant.

This is the first book I've read by Elizabeth Berg and she has an exceptional talent of creating ordinary, down to earth characters whom the reader instantly feels empathy with. In 'Say When' she successfully writes a book about a break-up without creating bias towards either partner. Although the reader obviously feels sympathy for Griffin, Berg also enables the reader to empathise with Ellen's unhappy existence and to understand her reasoning behind making the hardest decision of her life. She allows the reader a raw glimpse of the emotions which people must experience during a marriage break-up and enables the reader to sympathise with the unbelievable sadness and difficulty which comes with making this decision. But the book isn't all doom and gloom; Berg also has a talent of juxtaposing sadness alongside happiness, and there are funny, warm moments throughout the book also. Ultimately it is a touching tale about self-discovery and realising that sometimes life can change when you least expect it.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not her best....., 17 Sep 2004
By Mrs. G. Richards "genrichards" (London) - See all my reviews

This review is from: Say When (Paperback)
I usually can't wait for the latest Elizabeth Berg offering and rush out and buy the book as soon as it it available. I did the same with book but am sorry that I did, it isn't her best effort, with none of the raw emotion and insight of some of her other books. I could not related to Frank in any way - he just didn't seem real, even though the book was told from his point of view. Ellen was more plausible: despite being immature and selfish, I really liked her - quirks and all. A merely passable book by a usually outstanding author.
