Product Description

Product Description

"How Linux Works describes the inside of the Linux system for systems administrators, whether they maintain an extensive network in the office or one Linux box at home. Some books try to give you copy-and-paste instructions for how to deal with every single system issue that may arise, but "How Linux Works actually shows you how the Linux system functions so that you can come up with your own solutions. After a guided tour of filesystems, the boot sequence, system management basics, and networking, author Brian Ward delves into open-ended topics such as development tools, custom kernels, and buying hardware, all from an administrator's point of view. With a mixture of background theory and real-world examples, this book shows both "how" to administer Linux, and "why" each particular technique works, so that you will know how to make Linux work for you.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not a sys admin book, 24 Oct 2004
By A Customer
Don't let the subtitle fool you: there's very little about the OS internals here. It's just a good book for home users switching from another OS to Linux/Unix, nothing more. With that in mind, you can still appreciate Mr. Ward's way of approaching the subject: clear and concise with just a few examples, but straight to the point. All considered a very good book, but not what I had in mind by reading the subtitle.

5.0 out of 5 stars Nice one!, 8 Dec 2004
The subtitle is slightly misleading as you don't need to be a superuser to get full value from this book. Very well written and structured. Clear, concise, no waffle. A handy book to keep by the PC.

5.0 out of 5 stars How The Penguin Works, 31 Jul 2004
By Hati (Auchinleck, Ayrshire, United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
An absolute work of art , for a techie book. It is an engrossing read and gives either the new user or techie (requiring a refresh) insight into this defacto OS. I have recently purchased Absolute FreeBSD & Wicked Cool Shell Scripts from the same stable as How Linux Works all from No Starch Press. These as well are excellent titles, seems to me that they are gaining a niche market.
