2.0 out of 5 stars Mathematics for Accomplished Mathematicians, 26 Sep 2006
I had high hopes for this book as I've been looking for a maths book to recommend to students wanting to go into game development, but have been sorely disappointed with it so far. The book clams to explore branches of mathematics "from the game developer's perspective, rejecting the abstract, theoretical approach in favor of demonstrating real, usable applications" and to cover both the basics as well as more advanced subjects, when in actuality the book suffers from the same problems as almost every other maths book I've read. The author uses mathematics to explain mathematics and doesn't take the time to properly explain the processes involved (particularly early on in the book). Coupled with the fact that there simply aren't enough examples to get to grips with the concepts presented the average reader (anyone other than an already accomplished mathematician to whom this book would be unnecessary) is left thinking certain parts of the book have simply been conjured into existence in the middle of the page.

The book also fails on another vital point, the number of errors in the book is the highest of any I've read. While there is an errata on the publishers website, it only covers a tiny fraction of the errors I've found so far, some are just basic typos but some could easily mislead a less experienced reader.

The book does however make a few interesting points and would make a useful reference book for someone who's already fairly au fait with the subject matter, and it is for this reason it earns two stars rather than just one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Unique Material +++, 20 Jun 2004
By A Customer
What I love most about this book is that it contains material which no other math book I've bought contains. The material is easy to understand and it teaches some pretty cool things to use in a game. Definately a welcomed addition to my shelf
